Our people are the most important asset in our pursuit of achieving excellence in education, research, and community service. Our staff not only enjoys outstanding benefits and professional growth opportunities, but also an environment noted for diversity, community involvement, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty. The Department of Biostatistics of the University of Washington, through the Center for Biomedical Statistics (CBS) and the Genetics Coordinating Center (GCC), is engaging in an increasing number of analyses of genetic data. These data sets include whole-genome sets of single nucleotide polymorphism data and gene-expression data. Whole-genome DNA sequence data are expected to be available in the near future. All of these data sets are characterized by large size and complex interaction structure. Care is needed in the management of these data and in developing and applying new methods of statistical analyses. These positions require computational and statistical skills, and familiarity with genetic applications is highly desirable. The specific projects generating the data change from time to time but they usually address issues of human health: either the causes of human disease or the causes of response to pharmaceuticals. The projects are from academic, non-profit and industrial institutions.
The Department of Biostatistics has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST/ENGINEER-SENIOR. This individual will develop and implement data management and statistical analysis methods for statistical genetic applications. These responsibilities involve the following activities: * Manage the storage, security and integrity of very large and complex data sets. * Develop and apply statistical analyses for genetic association studies and related projects * Program statistical analysis of very large data sets efficiently using parallel computing and other resources * Develop experimental designs for new studies and participate in the preparation of grant proposals * Develop, package and document software for use by CBS/GCC staff and others * Supervise data management and analysis activities of junior CBS/GCC staff members * Effectively communicate results of analyses to GCC staff and clinical collaborators in oral presentations, written reports and publications
Requirements: * Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics or related discipline * Three years of relevant experience in biostatistics, bioinformatics or related discipline * High level of computational skill in management and analysis of large data sets * Specific experience in genetic/genomic applications is highly desirable * Excellent communication skills Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
