Multiple Full and Part Time Positions may include:

The Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA) is seeking highly qualified and motivated teachers to work in an innovative environment. Virtual academy teachers are part of our pioneering effort in public education. Our teachers should therefore share the school’s pioneering mission and approach. Teaching in a virtual academy requires a strong educational background and a firm understanding of how best practices from a regular classroom can be applied to our innovative model. Though we are primarily focused on academics, all of our teachers must be comfortable using technology and supporting new users of technology. Teachers work primarily from their homes. For the 2009/10 school year the virtual high school will have 9th through 12th grade students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
As part of their regular teaching responsibilities, our teachers will demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:
Instructional/Curricular
• Have a working knowledge of the K12 curriculum and Online School as it relates to their grade and subject level assignment
• Highly qualified in core area of assignment
• Knowledgeable of the Washington EALR’s and GLE’s
• Support students/parents with placement, online school set up, curriculum and instructional issues
• Collect and evaluate work samples per school policy
• Participate in the school's Student Achievement Improvement Plan (SAIP)
• Develop effective instructional tools and strategies to supplement and enhance curriculum
Communication
• Contact the student weekly via e-mail or phone.
• Conduct bimonthly conferences with the student/parent to assess each student’s progress, learning style, and any other academic, social, or developmental issues
• Respond within 24 hours to student/parent inquiries via phone and/or e-mail during regular work week
• Participate in a weekly teacher conference call with the Academic Administrator
• Attend regularly scheduled face-to-face staff meetings
Records Management
• Develop and maintain student academic progress and attendance reports
• Develop and maintain Student Learning Plans (SLP’s)
• Submit monthly SLP’s and progress reports to administration
• Generate formal reports based on phone conferences
• Alert administrators of any concerns about student progress and attendance
• Process student change in placement, as needed
• Complete semester and end of year progress reports
• Knowledgeable in the application of data bases utilized by K12 or WAVA
Community
• Organize orientation, training, social, and educational activities for students and families
• Create a monthly newsletter or updated Web site
• Travel to assigned geographic areas to support students; participate in school activities such as open houses, expos, information session and orientations
• Lead student/parent orientations, as needed
Assessment/Evaluation
• Participate on IEP/RtI/504 teams for students with special needs
• Work with the administration to prepare students for state assessments
• Serve as proctors for site-based proctored exams
• Administer state assessments
• Assess students per WAVA policy

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
• 3+ years of teaching experience preferred
• Must meet highly qualified in subject area per NCLB
• Shared view of the virtual academy’s mission
• Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
• Appropriate Washington state certification and endorsement in core area of assignment
• An ability to support and guide adults as well as students
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Organization and time-management skills
• Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, and experience using them in a professional capacity
• Flexible schedule
• Access to DSL or better internet service

PREFERRED EXPERIENCES:
• Home schooling experience or experience working with home school students
• Special education training or experience
• Experience using Internet search engines
• Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database
• An ability to support adults with basic computer set-up and navigation

• Ability to edit and format documents utilizing different software programs.
• Ability and willingness to upgrade skills to maintain the highest level of efficiency and high quality work.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time using a computer and telephone, walk for extended periods of time both indoors and outdoors, and stand for extended periods of time
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
• Ability to perceive the nature of sound, have near/far visual acuity, gauge depth perception, provide written and oral information, and operate technology related equipment.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
If selected as a successful candidate, the following training dates are required:
?? Online training during the month of August.
?? On-site training in Olympia, dates to be determined.
This position is represented by the MEA collective bargaining unit. The position will work a schedule in coordination with the Virtual High School calendar. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary placement is based on the approved District salary schedule for the BASE and local TRI pay. Salary is based upon certificated experience, degrees and post baccalaureate college credits. Salary is adjusted for less than full time equivalent (1.0 FTE). Benefits include: health, dental, vision, long-term disability and life insurance.
