Description
POSITION PURPOSE: The Office of Information Resource Management (OIRM) is the central information technology office for King County and provides infrastructure and support to over 15,000 employees and several regional and municipal governments. This position will engineer and administer large complex UNIX/Linux County-wide technology systems. These include hardware, operating systems and configurations for various customers within King County departments. The customer base includes Finance, Transit, Public Health, Budget Office, Treasury, District Court and Superior Court.
WHO MAY APPLY: This recruitment is open to the general public. We are creating a pool of eligible applicants for anticiapted future term-limited temporary positions. Term-limited positions are fully benefited and at least six months in duration. As specific positions become available, this posting will be updated.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is exempt from FLSA requirements and is not overtime eligible. The normal workweek is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is required to participate in a 24/7 after hours support rotation.

Job Duties:
Design, engineer and implement complex UNIX/Linux systems.
Create technical specifications, design and implement test and production environments, back-up, security, and disaster recovery for systems.
Perform implementation of UNIX/Linux systems for sufficient capacity and fault tolerance.
Setup, configure, and administer production and non-production UNIX/Linux server hardware and software in a networked environment.
Configure Storage Area Networks.
Support, monitor, troubleshoot and maintain customer hardware and software.
Perform analysis of complex business functions, development of detailed business requirements, functional and technical designs, and test and implementation plans using standard hardware and operating systems and methodologies.
Test and validate new or updated information system products.
Evaluate and recommend new UNIX/Linux systems and upgrades.
Provide documentation for all project engineering, design, analysis and recommendations.
Document policies, changes, processes, and standards covering shared enterprise production environments, disaster recovery, and operational procedures.
Contribute to the Systems Engineering Team by collaborating with other employees on support and procedures.
Provide advanced UNIX/Linux troubleshooting expertise on escalated problems; resolve complex problems and service issues; escalate unresolved problems to appropriate resources.
Participate in 24 x 7 after hours support rotation.
Other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
At least 5 years recent experience configuring and maintaining UNIX/Linux servers in a production environment.
Advanced knowledge of server hardware and operating systems. Experience should include monitoring, installation, configuration, tuning, security, and management.
Knowledge of patch management and other security practices.
Advanced knowledge of Storage Area Networks.
Familiarity with scripting.
Experience integrating hardware and operating systems across multiple platforms.
Willingness and ability to quickly learn new technologies without formal training.
Must be able to prioritize and organize workload with limited supervision. Must be able to work effectively on multiple projects at the same time with continual interruptions.
Must possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Excellent communication, which includes verbal, written and listening skills. Communication skills must include the ability to communicate with clients and develop appropriate documentation.
Demonstrated ability to effectively apply customer service skills and techniques. This includes being responsive to customers, maintaining professionalism especially in stressful circumstances, and following through with customers to ensure needs were met.
Must be able to participate in a 24x7 after hours support rotation.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience/knowledge of HP-UX, RHEL and Sun Solaris systems.
Experience/knowledge of HP and EMC storage.
Experience/knowledge of Cisco and Brocade switches.
Experience/knowledge of Oracle databases.
Experience/knowledge with virtual environments.
Experience with server consolidation techniques.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The person in this position will be required to pass a background investigation and be finger printed depending on their assignment.
